Bosch SHU43C02UC/22

by Eric
(Chaska, MN, USA)

We own a Bosch SHU43C02UC/22 Dishwasher. We purchased it from Lowes about two years ago. It is one of the few appliances that I can honestly say that I truly LOVE. From the get-go, I had decided that we wanted to replace our old, noisy, ugly dishwasher (that came with the original house) with a much better machine. So I did my research and found that Bosch machines are the quietest and are one of the few that actually clean your dishes to the point that they are certified “Sanitized” by the NSF, an endorsement that means a lot to me.
This machine is super quiet. Sometimes I run it when company is in the house just to show it off. You can stand in front of the machine and carry on a conversation, only hearing a bit of water noise. It is very difficult to hear anything else that the machine is doing. In fact, I think they have to put lights on it so that you know it is running!

The inside of the machine is stainless steel which serves two purposes – this makes it quieter than plastic and is part of the design of the drying process for Bosch machines. There is no drying element. The tub itself along with the dishes inside are brought up to a very high temperature (but not so high that plastic melts), and everything evaporates.

While this process works wonderfully for metal, glass and china objects, it does not always work well for plastics and we often must dry the plastics by hand. If there is one criticism, that would be it, but this dishwasher’s positives far outweigh the inconvenience of drying a few plastic cups.

I would highly recommend this dishwasher – you pay a bit more, but in the end, you will love the product you get. A sister brand that is similar is Asko, but I have known several people who have had numerous service issues with Asko. Stick with Bosch. You will not be disappointed!

very dissapointed
by: Tim

Bought this unit I believe 4 years ago. Right from the start it had problems. I bought it from Menards and they were no help. I was told I had to get repair authorization from Bosch. It was not assembled correctly so it kept leaking and would shut off when floor trey filled with water. I wanted to exchange it for anohter but Bosch would not autorize. After this was fixed within months the water pump went out(because it had been pumping continuisly with original problem) Again Bosch was no help. Now less than 4 years old it needs a control module $167 parts only. I am going to junk it and go with another brand. Stay away from Bosch!

Re: Etching of Glassware
by: Anonymous

I called Bosch because I was having a terrible problem. They said to use Finish Powerball tabs. I have begun doing so and things look somewhat better. I'm still not thrilled with the results, though. In their defense, dishwasher detergents no longer contain phosphates and this is wreaking havoc with the dishwahers.

It was OK for the first couple of years....
by: Anonymous

We've had this model for about 3 1/2 years now. For the first couple of years, it was OK. Not great, but OK. But for the past year or so, I have grown to truly hate it. Apparently the new phosphate free detergents are part of the problem. Whatever you do, DO NOT use Finish Gel. It does not dissolve properly and leaves serious deposits on the dishes and on the inside of the machine. Dishes look perpetually cloudy and unclean. Worse, the working parts get gummed up and won't work at all unless thoroughly cleaned frequently. I am now using the Finish Powerball Tabs, which Bosch suggests, but my dishes don't look much better so far. After every cycle, I still have to take a toothpick and unclog the holes that the water sprays from. I truly wish I could afford to replace the dishwasher but I will have to bear with it for a bit longer. No more Bosches for me, though.

Still going strong after 8 years
by: Anonymous

Had our unit for 8 years now. It is as quiet today as the day it was installed. Visitors to our home ask us to start it after dinner just to hear (or not hear) how quiet it is! I know quite a few others who own these (Lowe's is a major supplier where we live) and nobody has had problems. Must have been a bad lot out there somewhere that is causing all these circuit board problems. We had an eye opening experience when we recently spent a week at one of the properties at our timeshare. After loading our dinner dishes in the cheap General Electric dishwasher, we started the unit and it was so loud, nobody could talk in the kitchen. In fact, we had to shut it off before going to bed because it was so loud that people could not sleep. Some people probably think that all dishwashers are loud -- too bad they have not heard a Bosch!

Poor Support
by: Chasfm11

I installed this machine in December 2006 and, until recently, we were very pleased with it. Now, we have the burnt solder problem on control board for the heating element but our serial number is too high for the recall. I just went around with Bosch this morning. They are sending a factory authorized tech out tomorrow and if he determines that it is a manufacturing defect, the repair is covered. It will be interesting to see out it goes.

they work great
by: repair tech

These dishwashers are great providing the consumer understands that there are different dw soaps out there, and now no real good ones because of environmental impacts. The best thing to use is cascade powder soap. no liquid and do not pre rinse your dishes or you will etch the glass. The soaps have enzymes in them so no food to eat up they will start to etch the glass and will make them appear milky. Obviuosly remove large chunks but let the dw do the work. Rinse aid is important and is a weighting agent to make the water bead off the dishes. This allows for good drying. The all in one soap balls although convenient do not work as they put the rinse aid in during the wash cycle and not the final rinse.
As a long time repair tech these are the Best DW out on the market for the price.

was great...
by: Anonymous

We loved this dishwasher... until it was part of the recalled lot. We received a replacement circuit board which lasted 2 whole months, and then another that lasted 13 months and now, the third went out. Loved that it drys without a heating element and if we don't leave too much food on it, dishes come out clean. Really bummed that the replacement circuit boards are crap.

Worked well for one year...
by: Anonymous

...and performance (washing, noise, reliability) declined. After five years, this unit is unable to wash. Its a blessing as this unit was a recurring headache with two repairs and high maintenance.

No problems so far after 5 years
by: Bosch Owner

White spots are almost always an issue with rinse aid. If you have white spots, I would suspect that you are either not using rinse aid, are using a cheap brand, the rinse aid dispenser does not work, or have very hard water. No dishwasher can "soften" water to remove water stains - blaming the dishwasher for hard water stains is like blaming your car when get bad gas from a gas station. As far as pre-rinsing, why bother? We put the dishes in un-rinsed, often with quite a bit of food still on them - and they come out clean every time. There is a filter that you need to periodically clean by hand (dishwashers with self cleaning filters are noisier and generally cost more to run). As far as repairs -- I guess we are lucky (along with about 12 other people I know who have Bosch dishwashers) -- no repairs have needed to be made and we've owned ours for going on 6 years now.

i don't get why everyone loves this machine so much
by: Anonymous

i just bought a house with 2 of these dishwashers, and i'm very disappointed. there's always white spots on all my silverware and dishes. i also have to rinse every dish to the point that every piece of grime is gone, because it won't come off in the machine. i don't get why my machines are the only misbehaving ones. my mother has a ge for years that makes everything come out spotless!

Expect to make repairs
by: GetAGoodRepairman

Yes, it's quiet and it does a good job cleaning dishes... We've had ours about 6 years and you should expect some repairs down the road. We've had the main circuit board go out, a $150 capacitor, and the water pump. Now, it appears that another motor has failed. We had a previous model in our old house that lasted this long without any repairs. I suppose we'll stick with it. Eventually, most of the parts will be replaced anyway.

Be sure you refill drying agent
by: Eric (Original Poster)

One thing that might be causing a problem is your drying agent (i.e. Jet Dry). If you allow this run out, dishes will not dry as efficiently. You also can't use the shorter cycles and expect dry dishes -- the dishes in the dishwasher (along with the stainless steel tub) must reach a certain temperature for an extended period of time. Lastly, make sure that you have not turned down the water temperature on your home water heater too much. This dishwasher heats it's own water, but can only boost the temperature so much. Finally -- you may want to check your dishwasher against the Bosch website for a recall -- some of these (mine was not included) were recalled about a year ago due to some electrical issue -- this could be affecting your drying cycle. Hope that this helps. We are going on 4 years now with our Bosch and still love it. I would not beware at all... it's a quality product that we run nearly every day at least once.

Buyer be ware

We have the same machine but in 3 years time it has stopped drying our dishes. We liked it before it stopped working but I would say it is unreliable to break in so short a time. thanks

Good quality for a low cost
by: Anonymous

This dishwasher is very quiet and gives exceptional performance. The Bosch brand of dishwasher give you what you get in the high-end Miele brand dishwasher for a lot less money. This dishwasher has several settings you can chose from when washing your dishes. They are: Regular wash, quick wash Rinse & Hold and it has additional drying heat. It has Power Scrub Plus features and has "refill Rinse Aid" indicator Light.

The Top rack is adjustable so you can lower it so you can put taller items in the top rack or raise it so you have more room below. Or you can take the top rack out totally and only use the bottom rack to place large commercial size pots in. The "Clean Light Indicator" is illuminated when the cycle is complete. It has a very easy to use Soap dispenser and Rinse agent dispenser.

You can set a dial for your rinse aid depending on what the water type is (hard, medium or soft) and if it's a heavier wash cycle, Regular Wash, or Lighter Wash Cycle. The Bosch company gives you a "Troubleshooting" sheet for when something seems to not be working correctly. And, if you cannot correct the problem yourself, you can contact customer Service number listed on the ID Label on the the right side of the Dishwasher door and they will send someone out to help you.

We have owned a Bosch Dishwasher twice now. The second time, we had purchased a house and the dishwasher was so loud we couldn't stand it so immediately went and bought the Bosch SH043C.We purchased it at Filco Discount Center in Sacramento for $578. We have had it for four years and have had no problem with it whatsoever.

Bosch is a superb company and if you are looking for a good quality product and not have to pay the high costs of the high-end appliances, it would be very advantages for you to check into Bosch products.
