Bosch SHX43M dishwasher

by Helene
(Cathedral City, CA)

My husband and I purchased a Bosch SHX43M after much looking and research. My husband was really sold on it's water and energy saving features. Overall, I suppose it is okay, but I must confess I really miss our old dishwasher.

The Bosch does seem to save energy, but only because it does not have a heating element or coil (!). Instead, it tries to dry the dishes by using the hot water to make the inside cabinet very hot and then rely upon evaporation to dry the dishes. This does not work well, in my opinion. Also, you must use a "rinse agent" to get anything to dry and that only increases expense and chemical usage. The wash cycle is also very long, which I think wastes water, even on the energy saving settings.

An even more annoying feature of the Bosch is that the upper rack has almost no tines (those little upright sticks to keep your glassware in place), so the glasses fall over into each other whenever you open and close the dishwasher. This makes loading extremely frustrating. I would say that this is the worst feature of this appliance.

On the good side, this dishwasher is EXTREMELY quiet. I mean, you have to really listen to even tell if it is running. I really like that feature -- our old dishwasher sounded like the tarmack at LAX. I also really like the look of this dishwasher -- very nice black front and comfortable handle. This quiet running is the best feature of this appliance. If you want quiet, you would be hard pressed to find something that makes less noise. Bottom rack is also pretty nice -- silverware basket is divided and includes a cover to keep small items in the basket. Top shelf also has a small cover or extra shelf bracket to keep little cups in the top rack. Nice features if you have young children with small cups and other items.

The Bosch gets the dishes clean standard for ordinary soiling, but it does not seem clean heavy soil or starchy residue.

The controls are located on the inside of the top edge of the door. This is both good and bad -- good if you have little kids you don't want fiddling with the controls, but bad in that you need to open the dishwasher (mid-cycle, etc.) to see the time remaining or get the "beep for the end of cycle timer to stop ringing, which either gets you wet or interferes with the steam evaporation for the post-cycle drying process.

Worst Dishwasher Ever!!!!! NEW
by: Jenny Boyer

I purchased a Bosch from Lowes a few years ago, and it is the biggest piece of crap! Since the day it was installed, it has never dried my dishes! I paid alot of money for this dishwasher, and the only good thing I can say about it is, it's quite while it's washing the dishes. All the little spokes that are supposed to separate the plates and cups have fallen off, and won't stay on, and when it's done washing the dishes it makes a annoying beeping sound every few minutes, and it's very loud! I will never purchase a Bosch again!!

U R Rite - It's lousy! NEW
by: Anonymous

It doesn't get the dishes clean
It takes FOREVER
Dishes aren't dry but they're too hot to handle

and then there's the constant emptying of the garbage strainer inside the machine. YUK! If you don't empty it the old food debris ends up on your next load. BLECHT!

This dishwasher is THE WORSE!

Not loving my new Bosch dishwasher NEW
by: Anonymous

I don't like the fact that the tines (those little upright sticks to keep your glassware in place)are at an angle. The tines were straight up in my last dishwasher and I felt the dishes were held in more secure that way. Also I feel like the bottom rack could of had more tines to hold more dishes. The other problem I have is it doesn't dry my dishes well so after I run the dishwasher I don't empty it until the next day giving it time to air dry. Not what I was hoping for in a dishwasher.

Not very happy NEW
by: Fotowiz

The machine is energy star rated, but if you factor in that the size of the racks are small, which, therefore means more of them, then the supposed savings are lost. Same with the supposed water savings. If you wash more frequently because of the smaller size, savings are gone.
As for the racks, they are the worst I've ever used. I'm 68 years old and have used many dishwashers over the years, and this is hands down the worst! The angled tines and their spacing is inconvenient. The very wide spaces in the bottom rack dont allow small items which might have gone on top but for the fact that the top fills up so fast that you must either re-load the larger items to the lower rack, or skip the small ones till next time. Bad! The depth of the racks allow me only 6 wine/water glasses compared to 7 in my previous washers, 15% less! But, because the differently spaced, left to right rack areas are all different, you can only get specific glasses in certain rows. Bad! Anyway, this dishwasher is quiet, cleans ok, must have rinse agent, doesn't dry well, beeps too long at inopportune times, etc., etc., etc. Two and a half stars, period.

Annoying beeps NEW
by: Anonymous

I bought this dishwasher because it was well rated and it was quiet. I usually turn on the dishwasher after I dinner, about 8:30 to 9:00 PM. The wash takes very long, and then while I am asleep, the dishwasher begins to beep 5 times, 10 minutes later it beeps 5 times again, and so on. Why? I do not know. I do know that it wakes me up at least four times. This is the most annoying feature of the dishwasher. I tried to mute the beeping by following directions from the manual, but it did not work.

dispelling the myths NEW
by: jason

i see a common theme with people complaining about the need for jet dry because of cost. in order to clarify this myth it is important to include the fact that jet dry costs the consumer 4 dollars a year retail. this hardly justifies a complaint of extra costs. also, people are stating that it wastes water by having long wash cycles. this is untrue because if you know anything about dishwashers you would know that the same water is cycled throughout the entire cycle until final rinse. this fact is why the cycles are longer in a bosch. simply put, bosch cycles are longer because they use half the water of the industry standard and therefore it cycles it longer to produce the same cleaning effect. these are the facts. thank you.
