Comparing GE Convertible Dishwashers

With so many different dishwashers on the market, it might be hard to decide which one is just right for you.

Here I will take a look at the new convertible dishwashers by GE, and give you a side-by-side comparison of the eight available models and the features they each have.

First, however, let’s take a look at what gives this dishwasher its name.

What are GE Convertible Dishwashers

What exactly is a convertible dishwasher and why would I need one? A convertible dishwasher is simply a dishwasher that can be used in either of the two basic ways.

That is, it can be used as a portable dishwasher and hooked up to the faucets, or as a built-in dishwasher that is hooked directly into the plumbing.

It may seem unconventional at first, but there are actually a number of positive things about owning one of these models.

One of the best reasons for this is that you can use it wherever you live.

If, for example, your current apartment has hookups for a dishwasher under the counter, but your next apartment does not, you could use one of these models at both places without having to switch models or keep it in the middle of the room in the apartment that has a space for a built in.

It is also a great choice for people who are currently renting or living in a place without a spot for a dishwasher who want to build or purchase a house where the dishwasher will be built in later on.

These machines are quite versatile and come with a number of features and functions. Let’s now take a look at the different models and what comes standard with each one.

GE Convertible Dishwasher Key features

All eight of the models have the Piranha hard food disposer, which gets rid of excess food that comes off during washing, preventing it from latching on to other dishes during the wash process.

They all have the patented Perma-Tuf tub and door liner and the Quiet power motor for a whisper quiet dishwashing cycle.

All eight models also weigh approximately 131 pounds and measure 27 in. deep by 36 3/8 in. high and 24 7/8 in wide and come with a limited one year parts and labor warranty.

Models available

Expensive price

The first individual models are the GSC3400JBB and the GSC3400JWW. With an average retail of $549, these are the two top level dishwashers.

The 3400JBB is black in color, while the 3400JWW is white and both have a number of features. They are the only two models that are safe for crystal and china. They have TouchTap controls and a Cycle On progress indicator.

There are 7 cycles and 39 options. You can set the delayed start anywhere from one to six hours, and can turn the energy saver on and off.

There are also selectable heated dry, heavy wash, hi-temp wash, and HotStart options. These models have the standard center throw latch for closing the door.

They also feature a deluxe lower rack and a dial operated plate warmer. These models are excellent for washing pots and pans, and have a rinse aid dispenser with an indicator and a dial for rinse only and short wash options.

They also have a split silverware basket. The doors are made of steel and there are a total of 8 touchpads on these models.

They have a super upper rack and have 2 wash arms and 5 wash levels. They use the PowerScrub wash system and each one features dual water filtration.

Each one also features the patented QuietDesign sound insulation package for the quietest dishwashing cycle available. All in all, these are the higher end models of GE’s convertible dishwasher.

Medium range

The second set of models are the GLC4100NWW and the GLC4100NBB, which retail at $509. The WW model is white in color, while the BB model is black.

These are excellent upper-mid range models. Still featuring the heated dry, heavy wash, and HotStart features, these models offer many of the same options as the higher end model at a lower price.

These models have electronic controls and have a total of 4 cycles and 5 options that can be selected.

They feature either a two or four hour delay option and a full length flat door.

These models are Energy Star qualified, which can mean significant electric cost savings. They have a squeeze latch on the door and have the deluxe silverware basket with a cell cover.

These models differ from the previous models mainly in that they do not have the plate warmer, the pots and pans option, or the sort and hi-temp wash cycles.

They also have nine touchpads instead of eight and feature three wash arms and four wash levels.

These models use GE’s patented BrilliantClean wash system and have the QuietPower 1 sound insulation system to provide you with sparkling clean dishes while running so quietly you forgot you were even washing dishes.

Low Medium range

Up third in our review are models GLC3200JBB (black) and GLC3200JWW (white). Retailing at $499, these are the mid-level dishwashers.

They provide clean dishes and a quiet cycle, but without a few of the frills and extra options of the more expensive models. The first difference with these models is that they feature pushbutton controls rather than electronic ones.

They have 5 cycles and 22 selectable options, but do not have the delayed start feature and are not Energy Star qualified.

They have heated dry and hi-temp wash features as well as the HotStart option, and still have the deluxe lower rack, as well as the plate warmer and pots and pans feature, the latter of which was not available on the previous models.

They do not have the heavy wash option or the light wash option, but still have the rinse aid dispenser and the short was and rinse only cycles.

These models have the super upper rack rather than the deluxe, but come packed with 2 wash arms and 5 wash cycles.

They have the dual water filtration system. They also have the QuietDesign sound insulation package, and the PowerScrub wash system, both of which are also found on the high end models.

All in all these models seem to trade in the electronic controls for pushbutton ones, but otherwise are more comparable to the high-end models than to the middle or low end ones that the price might suggest.

Budget range

Finally, we have the GSC3500NWW (white) and the GSC3500NBB (black). Retailing at $449, these are the least expensive models of convertible dishwasher that GE manufactures.

These are essentially your standard dishwasher, but that doesn’t mean that they are of low quality by any means. With TouchTap controls, these models have 5 cycles and 2 options.

They still have a number of the features that the other dishwashers offered, such as heated dry, hi-temp wash, HotStart, light wash, normal wash, rinse only, the plate warmer, and the pots and pans option.

The real differences are the number of options and the fact that these models have standard doors and racks rather than deluxe ones.

These models are Energy Star certified, which increase their savings to you yet again.

Final Thought

All eight models are packed with features and have their own appeal.

It is best to do a little a little homework and figure out if a convertible dishwasher is right for you and if so, to figure out which features you want to have in a dishwasher before selecting a model.

In addition, read customer reviews to find out what buyers think of the models you are considering so that you can be certain you are getting exactly what you want.

All in all, the convertible dishwashers by GE seem to be a good value for quite a reasonable price.
