GE Nautilus

by anni
(brandon, fl, usa)

We, my husband and I, are currently renting our house. We moved in just over two years ago. With the house came all the major appliances including the dishwasher. It is a GE Nautilus model. I’m not sure how old it is.

The capacity is fairly small but for the majority it does a decent job of cleaning the dishes. I originally thought it was not working well until I tried different dishwasher detergents. Now I’ve found one that works very well most of the time. One of the problems I do have with it, though, is occasionally certain items get food material inside them.

For instance, I have a pair of water bottles that notoriously do not get clean in the dishwasher. When I pull them out there is almost always little bits of debris inside even though they remained upside down on the top rack. Occasionally this happens to other glasses and other items on the top rack and I have been able to identify the cause and, therefore, the solution to the problem.

It also doesn’t appear to have a very good seal around it. We have been battling an ant problem not for several months and even when we keep the kitchen counters free of dirt dishes, we still end up finding the ants marching into the dishwasher scrounging leftovers off those in the dishwasher.

It offers features such as a heated wash, rinse only, plate warmer and pots and pans wash as opposed to normal wash settings. The only feature I wish it had in addition to those is a sanitize option. I have a 7 month old daughter and could really use that.

Overall, it is a decent machine but nothing special.

GE Nautilus: (Rating 3) I give my GE Nautilus a rating of 3 because it's performance is not the best that I've observed, but it's satisfactory enough not to be labeled the worst either. I chose this brand because GE has been more than satisfactory in the washer and dryer that I own. One pro/positive that I observe is the wash "Hot Start" option.

Total options include Hot Start, Normal Wash, Short Wash, and Rinse Only. In my experience, Hot Start (which was not available on my previous GE model) results in fewer small particles of food left behind on the dishes in the bottom rack. My understanding from reading the owner's manual is that Hot Start heats the water from the very beginning of the cycle, not just when the machine gets to the main wash cycle.

The second pro of the GE Nautilus dishwasher is the "Pots and Pans" option. Again, this option seems to get the dishes on the bottom rack cleaner. I am accustomed to spots on glasses and other items in the top rack. As a matter of fact, I actually prefer to wash those items by hand.

However, I am a big fan of placing pots and pans in the dishwasher when I have guests and using the Pots & Pans setting usually ensures I don't have to rewash the dishes after my company leaves - unless they're very heavily soiled.

Two cons/negatives about the GE Nautilus are the outcome of the dishes in the top rack and the capacity on the bottom rack. Both dishwashers that I have owned have been GE, so perhaps this is an area that needs improvement overall. My experience has been that glasses and other items on the top rack end up soiled with food particles from items on the bottom rack.

As mentioned previously, I usually end up washing the glasses by hand even after a run through the dishwasher. I am further displeased by the somewhat limited space on the bottom rack.

I can easily fit one large pot and smaller saucepans or baking dishes in the bottom; however, the bottom rack is not satisfactory if I am cooking for more than myself and I use more than one large pot. I end up crowding the rack and because there are too many dishes, the lot usually isn't thoroughly cleaned.

Overall, I am at least satisfied, if not pleased with my GE Nautilus dishwasher

Trusted with my baby's bottles
by: Erin

I'm pretty satisfied with this dishwasher. It's a few years old and for the most part works almost as good as it did brand new. It has a quiet package on it and it was always pretty quiet but the last few months it seems to have gotten a little noisy. Not so much that it is irritating or obnoxious, we just notice it's there more than we used to.

I love that it has a delay setting of up to 6 hours. I've only used it a few times but our old dishwasher in one of our first houses only went up to 3 hours best I can remember. It get's my dishes clean and I trust it with my newborn's bottles and pacifiers. I also feel comfortable putting my toddlers sippy cup regulator pieces in it.

I have this set of tupperware that it seems to leave detergent particles behind on the big pieces but those are the only ones I have this problem with. And every once in a while, when my husband loads it and doesn't clean off dried caked on food on the silverware, it doesn't come off. Which I can live with that because it's just on the forks so I can clean them off real quick by hand.

But otherwise, it cleans my dishes really well and I feel that they are clean and safe for us and most importantly our small children. And finally, the drying process. It gets so hot in there still after several years. I am surprised because our hard water has always caused spotting but somehow we don't have it with this dishwasher and we use the cheapest store brand detergent we can find, nothing fancy just soap. It dries them fairly quickly and it's nice to not have spotted water glasses and spoons.
