GE Triton XL

by Alexandria
(Berwick, Pa USA)

My dishwasher was a gift, so I'm not sure where it was purchased. I received it 4 years ago after begging for one for my birthday. I love all the different settings it has on it. Anything can be washed in my dishwasher.

It has a setting for crystal, pots and pans, normal wash, and an antibacterial cycle. The anti bacterial cycle is great for baby bottles. I have 2 toddlers and don't have time to stand around and wash bottles.

I've never had to rewash anything that has been washed in my dishwasher, it's not loud. It often runs while my kids nap.

There is a ton of room inside. I can easily fit all the dinner dishes from my family of four. It gets used at least once or twice a day, and in four years I've never had a problem. It has run perfect every single time. I think any busy mom should have one. Actually I think everyone who hates washing dishes by hand as much as I do should have one.

This is by far the best dishwasher I have ever owned. I've told all my friends about my wonderful dishwasher, and my best friend bought the same one and she loves her just as much as I love mine.

THE ABSOLUTE WORST
by: Anonymous

I am not one to write reviews, but after hand washing yet another load of dishes (that came out dirtier than before they went in the dishwasher) I needed to vent! I bought this dishwasher 6 years ago when I remodeled my kitchen. Within the first year all of the wheels broke off the bottom rack. Every time I do a load of dishes I have to put the wheels back on...it's a battle, to say the least. When I finally get them all on and successfully position the bottom rack I start the dishwasher only to get a grinding sound every time it's run. Many times it won't drain properly and water will come spilling out all over my kitchen floor. And the biggest issue I have is that I can't remember a time in the past four years where I have been able to simply take out the dishes and put them away. I have to rewash almost all of the dishes because they come out dirtier than before I put them in. I've started doing the dishes by hand more so than not now as I get so frustrated (as this morning) dealing with this piece of junk dishwasher. I will not buy another GE dishwasher ever.

Great Dishwasher (WITH THE RIGHT DETERGENT)
by: Anonymous

I have a G.E. Triton profile dishwasher and it works great. There has been TON of people buying new dishwasher's because of the white film that is left behind. The reason is because the E.P.A. banned T.S.P. or Phosphorus in dishwasher detergents almost two years ago.I used to always use Cascade Complete powder and I never pre rinse or even scrape my dishes and they were always spotless.Well when the ban took in effect it was terrible nothing came clean.I am a Mechanical engineer and allot of people don't know how important that one chemical is.It is a water softer and it makes water wetter and keeps the food from sticking to the dishes. You can buy T.S.P. at Home depot and add about a teaspoon in the main wash but that is a pain.Procter and gamble is trying to fix Cascade and if you go to there Website you will see all the mad people the reviews are terrible. You can still get dishwasher detergent with Phosphates cause the ban did not apply for commercial dishwasher detergent.I have found the best detergent to be Finnish quantum and Colgate-Palmovive triple action tabs. The Colgate is commercial detergent and comes in a box of two hundred for about 40 bucks.I have terrible hard water and if I use normal Cascade or Finnish powered and ran it twice in Pots and Pans it would still be dirty. The Phosphorus is a plant food and causes algae blooms but with these new dishwasher's using small 12 gallons a minute motor's compared to a 1988 Kitchenaid the pushed out 60 gallons a minute and this new detergent it's no wonder nothing is coming clean. It's sad the way things are made Frigidaire dishwasher's use Aquarium pump motors in there dishwasher's and has to switch form top arms to bottom and it's a very weak spray. The G.E. is a great dishwasher if you use Finnish quantum or Colgate commercial triple action packs. You can find great deals on ebay....

Why bother
by: Anonymous

I found this website because I'm at my wits' end with my GE Triton XL. To start, for three years we put up with grit in the upper rack glasses only to discover that the upper spray arm was factory installed UPSIDE DOWN. Once removing it and putting it on the correct way, the glasses did get cleaner. But, in the five years we've had it we've paid countless times to have wheels replaced, door panels fixed, and mostly screens/drains unclogged....and we are plate-rinsers.....nothing goes straight into the dishwasher!

Now it's decided to stop draining.....I've cleaned the screens, run a cleaning cycle, and water just pours out the door. I finally sucked all the water out with a wet vac and after I shut the door, even more water started pouring out of the door itself onto the floor. It's been fifteen minutes and it's down to a steady drip onto the floor. That's when I decided enough was enough I jumped onto the computer to see if I could possibly be the only person with this problem.

I've read enough entries to know that I'll be going to Sears tomorrow to pick out my new dishwasher. We've been handwashing for a week and just using it as a drying rack....pretty ridiculous and inconvenient with a family of seven. Shame on you, GE, for such a useless product!

New In 2005 Sears
by: MarshallGulch

Hi
This is now Sept. 2011 and we have had this unit
for six years. The only problem for us is the rusting of the tips in the racks. Not where the dishes are placed. The sides where the metal ends.
I just priced replacing the racks at $300.00 for both. The warranty is five years, for the racks.
The body/shell warranty is ten years. So, I will try to snip off the rusted ends and reseal. I am not sure what will stand up to the temps and soaps.
I am thinking a glob of Gorilla glue on each might work.
The soap for us is Cascade complete. Always using the rinse agent. I have never messed with the filter in the bottom or used vinegar. Thou, that does sound cleansing. We do have hardwater, and there may be a couple jets that are clogging.
The sound level has always been quiet for us in a open kitchen. The crystal rinse cycle is great for gentle items like special glassware and delicate light fixtures. I really like the grid on the bottom that doesn't allow large or hard things to go thru. A chopstick tip killed the last dishwasher. I would buy this again if available.

soap dispenser won't close
by: Anonymous

I too have a triton for about 7 years. For the past year the soap dispenser doesn't close, you have to push the latch a millimeter and it will close. Also the dispenser is full of leftover soap which means my dishes probably have a soapy film on them. I am going to try cleaning the filter. I have tried everything from different detergents to water temp. Would not recommend this dishwasher.

Rapture
by: Anonymous

Since the world did not end on May 21, I decided my dishwasher would feel the rapture...I have had it with this dishwasher, I am having all the same issues everyone else is AND I have cleaned it with vinegar, taken the entire thing apart and cleaned it, bought the self cleaners from the grocery store and it STILL leaves my dishes gritty. So every day I load the dishwasher, run it, unload to the sink and wash everything...never again.

Clean them
by: Anonymous

All of the comments below ar complaining of the same problem for a reason. Scrap your plates, stop using it like a garbage disposal, and run a clean cycle every now and then and you would get that grit and noise. Also most people dont know this but cut your soap usage in half and always use rinse aid. I work on appliances and 95% of my calls on this machine are user error!

Filthy women replaces GE Triton dishwasher
by: Anonymous

Dishwashers are not maintenance free, you need to clean them about 1 time every couple of months to keep them working well.

I bought my 3 year old stainless GE Triton XL from a Craigslist ad for $40.00. The honest ad said the dishwasher left grit and didn't clean well. I knew immediately the women was filthy and didn't maintain her dishwasher, so my husband and I gave her the $40.00, brought home the dishwasher, cleaned '3 cleaning cycles' the disgusting filthy machine with vinigar, a pot scubber and spounge and it now works beautifully and leaves the dishes sparkling clean.

We rent a home and this dishwasher is probably the worst I have ever had. It is loud, makes groaning and whirring sounds, and leaves the dishes dirty despite all the different soaps I have tried.

Pure Junk
by: Anonymous

We bought this dishwasher in 2004 when we built our house. It seemed to work well for about a year maybe two, then it had the rumbling noise mentioned here. I cleaned the filter under the lower spray arm which is a real pain, it helped somewhat. Another problem is the soap dispenser always has soap sticking to it that has to be cleaned off regularly. We really have to rinse the dishes well before putting the dishes in or they won't get cleaned. What's the point of having a dishwasher?

We finally got fed up and ordered a Kenmore Elite model #1392. It has a wire mesh filter which looks to have access to to clean and a stainless steel tub as well. All I can say is this dishwasher is PURE JUNK!

Groaning vibration sound cure
by: Anonymous

Ours was making the loud groaning or vibration noise. I was able to cure it by removing the lower spray arm, the lock collar under it, and removing and washing out the fine mesh filter screen below it. It had a lot of the sand like grit in it many are complaining about. It appeared the grit was plugging the screen enough for the pump pressure to cause vibration of the screen housing against the tub floor. No tools required and took about 10 minutes. The arm comes off by lifting and turning counter clockwise, the collar turns counter clockwise, and the screen assembly lifts straight up and has a tube inserted through the tub floor on the back side.

I too have problems with the Triton
by: Anonymous

My Triton came with our new house and it worked fine for the first two years but began making noises when in use. Now the water does not drain from it after the wash cycle and I've been getting the water out manually....UGH! I appreciate the comments with regard to the Triton. Looks like I'll be looking at a Kenmore in the very near future....Thanks!

noise

My 5 year old dishwasher had always worked and no problems. Every 6 months I put in 1 cup of white vinegar to an empty dishwasher. It has worked but recently I have heard a strange noise. I'll be taking the filter off next. ........

No more washing pots by hand!
by: Annette

We've had our Triton XL for about 10 years. We purchased it because it has a deep tub and can fit large pots (say goodbye to handwashing!). It also has THREE jets...one in the very top, one under the top rack, and one in the bottom. We have only had to replace a motor gasket and an end cap on the top rack roller track. It has worked very well for us and still does. I can even put Pampered Chef stoneware in it (without using dishwasher soap, of course) and it cleans perfectly on the antibacterial setting.

Now that it's 10 years old, the racks are starting to rust. That's the only problem with it and it happens with all 10 year old dishwashers. The "grinding" sound that you may hear occasionally is because of the arrangement of your dishes in it...when you pack it too full and block the water jets you will hear this noise. Simply remove some items and rearrange them. You also have to occasionally check the trap in the bottom of the tub. Dishwashers do not have garbage disposals built into them so food should be removed before loading it.

Hard water will damage dishwashers and washers so be sure to use a water softener if you have hard water. I can't speak for appliances that have had previous owners...you just don't know how well they took care of their stuff.

I would recommend the Triton XL, having owned one for so long with minimal problems.

Same issues as everyone else
by: Anonymous

Dishes came out dirtier than they went in. Only the fine grit on them was baked on. Hand washing them was a royal pain afterward.

The motor went out in ours last year when it was 3 years old. A month ago, it just started leaking out the side.

This thing is ridiculous.

My new unit is being installed as I type. It's a Kenmore. Do your research. If you have over $1k to spend, buy a Bosch. Otherwise, Kenmore has the best reviews across the board.

This dishwasher can pound sand, and so can GE.

Triton XL residue
by: Eric

It seems this residue issue is common on the Triton. We have a 3 year old unit and has habitually experienced residue issues (fine sand) on dishes and glasses, particularly on the top row. I've just got done with a thorough cleaning of all the sprayers and components, white vinegar rinse and switching to Cascade Complete detergent. Does anyone have any other suggestions or ways to improve performance. I hate to have to buy a new dishwasher but we're fed up. I've cranked up the temp and I don't think water pressure is an issue as I think this model has both a built in heater and internal jet pump. Thanks if you guys have any other suggestions.

Inefficient
by: Jeff A

I agree with Tim and Karen. Our GE Triton came installed in our new house 4 years ago. For the first year, it seemed to work well and was the quietest dishwasher we'd ever owned. After that, we began to have drainage problems. I too, have learned how to clean the debris basket that is held captive under the lower spray arm! I find that disassembling the lower equipment just to clean a basket is annoying. Over the past year, we too have found that the dishes are just not getting clean on either rack. Basically, we rinse them well before they go into the dishwasher, which is pointless. The machine also groans now, as do we.
Unless GE has overcome these issues, I would not recommend this machine. I am saving our $$ to buy something else.

I hate this dishwasher!
by: Anonymous

I have the same problem with my Triton XL as other people have mentioned..... the dishes/glasses on the top rack come out dirtier than they went in and have to be hand washed afterwards. I don't even know why I bother putting anything on the top rack any more. I am very disappointed with this dishwasher.

I would not recommend this dishwasher
by: Tim

Initially, this dishwasher performed admirably. It ran more quietly than any dishwasher I have ever owned. Though our kitchen is an open design with informal dining and family room, the dishwasher ran so quietly that we could operate it even with company over and it would not be noticed. We almost never used the Delay Start feature. We also found the cleaning performance to be excellent as well.

Our dishwasher performed like a workhorse, completing an average of four to five loads per week for approximately a year and a-half until one day it started making groaning noises during the wash cycle. Once the load was started and the initial water fill was complete, the dishwasher would groan rather loudly during any wash portion of the cycle. No longer could it be used with guests nearby as it was now a noticeable embarrassment.

As I was concerned that it might be a major problem, I searched online and found many others have experienced a similar issue. Since our unit was out-of-warranty, we opted not to pay to have it fixed. The good news is that it continues to operate nearly two years after it began making these noises.

The second issue we noticed as that dishes, particularly glasses were beginning to look dirty after a wash cycle. Sometimes they looked more dirty than when they went in! They appeared to get a coating of fine food particles as though they were washed in dirty water and not rinsed.

We tried various tips and tricks including cleaning the waste food filter at the bottom of the tub, running the garbage disposal thoroughly before every load and even different brands of detergent. No single method seemed to cure the issue, though it seems that maybe a combination of running the disposal and using two different detergents simultaneously (half filled with each) has helped keep the problem under control.

Based on my experience with this model, I cannot recommend it to others. Noting that the issues I experienced have been experienced by many others as well, I would not recommend GE dishwashers of any model, either. In fact, these issues have been so troubling that we have seriously considered replacing the unit.

I agree, nasty residue
by: Dawn

We are finally getting rid of our Triton XL for the same reason Karen mentioned. Dishes on the top rack usually come out dirtier than they went in and have to be hand washed to get the residue off - and we never use the "heated dry" option. In addition I literally know how to put the wash arms back on with my eyes closed (I've tried it) because they tend to fall off every few months - although I've fixed this with plastic twist ties. I'll be very glad to see this dishwasher out the door.

Very durable and dependable
by: Anonymous

GE Triton XL is a extra large Dishwasher stainless steel finish and makes almost no noise - very convenient for single family homes, also comes with different appearances to match the kitchen cabinets, like "wooden panel trim kit" Trimless wood panel kit"

It has several options to choose the wash cycle for all types of dishes , also best part is antibacterial drying, Sanitized, delay wash , Pots & Pans , energy saver, Rinse only Heated Dry etc are very useful.

The Upper and the Lower levels have at least 20 spaces to load the dishes, which is very convenient and can load almost half load more than a normal sized dishwasher.

Over all its very useful and worth the money invested.
PROS: Very durable & dependable
CONS: None

Nasty residue
by: Karen

I purchased this dishwasher from Home Depot approximately 6 years ago and we are still using it. This is the largest model Home Depot carried at the time.

One of the features that I bought it for was the push buttons with child lock feature instead of a dial for operation. It features the following cycles: Pots/Pans, China/Crystal, Normal, Antibacterial, Rinse Only, and Speed Cycle. It also has an Extra Hot Wash that I wanted at the time to sanitize baby bottles.

Another very nice feature of this model is the “Delayed Wash” option. You can load the machine and set it to run in 2, 4, or 8 hours. Perfect when you need to hop in the shower but don’t want to forget about running the dishwasher! When the machine is done, there is an indicator that lights up to tell you the dishes are CLEAN.

This machine washes dishes relatively well. Its operation is quiet but the cycles are pretty long. One issue on this model is that things on the top rack, (mugs, glasses), do not get clean. This is in spite of the fact that there is a separate washing arm for the top rack.

There is always a nasty residue that must be hand washed out, no matter how high you set the rinse aid distribution or what brand of soap is used.

Another issue is that the bottom of the dishwasher must be cleaned out frequently. This model does not allow small particles of food to flush out with the used water.
