Kenmore 587 Model dishwasher

Our home came with a Kenmore 587 Model dishwasher when we purchased it. I estimate that the dishwasher is now 6 years old. It was a built-in model, as the home was a new construction when the previous owners had the home built.

I would not give this dishwasher a good review. I have talked to my husband about taking it out and buying another one.

It has no bells and whistles and many things come out just as dirty as they went in, especially the silverware.

I am careful to avoid nesting when I put the silverware in and the machine doesn't do a good job with anything remotely dirty. I feel the need to pre-wash just about everything I put in there. Another bad aspect of this dishwasher is that it has an annoying habit of mildewing.

If we were to go away for even just a day or two, I need to prop the door open slightly. It also gets clogged a lot and we have had to disassemble the machine to clean it out to allow for drainage. In the summer, it seems to mildew a lot more frequently.

Allowing dishes to dry under the air dry feature does not get them dry, nor does the drying cycle. No matter which you press, the dishes are wet when you take them out.

I would steer clear of Kenmore 587 Model.

Kenmore 587 Dishwasher

Junk...dirty dishes when done....growls like a dog and howls like cat...used only a few months. What is Sears thinking....or are they?

I will never buy another Kenmore diswasher again. We had our property manager buy it for our rental & it has died after 4 years. Our whirlpool on the other hand in our house has lasted 12+ years & still working well. Our property manager said that renters don't treat the appliances as well as homeowners but I don't believe a dishwasher should die after 4 years when the one we have is working. I'll stay away more Kenmore from now on, no matter what kind of sale they be having on them because I know I'll just have to replace it later anyway.

I Concur

After 3 years the unit has died. Am I sad to see it go? Heck no! For the past two years (a week after the warranty elapsed), it has only been able to run one cycle - the longest of course. The technician said it needed a new motherboard. $450+ dollars, plus labour. So, for the past two years, I have been running one cycle only. I also had the same cleaning problems. Rinse aid helped - a bit. I have had no help whatsoever from Sears. Too big to care. Too cheap to swallow costs. Maybe I'll look into small claims court as well. What ever happened to quality?

Disgusted with dirty dishes/flatware
by: Anonymous

I also assumed Kenmore would be the grandest but I did, but it turns out it worked only a year or two. From that moment on we caleld repair service to replace racks, to replace other parts. It has never cleaned well at all. I also experience that foggy stain or soapy stains on glasses and it is difficult to remove! My forks, spoons come out dirty and stained as well. There is also no drying out. The dishes are still wet! Have to wait 3 hrs for dishes to completely dry. It has been a pain. Now I don't want a Kenmore anymore. Looking for other brands.

Recent problems
by: Anonymous

I bought this model about 5 year ago for my mom's house. As a few other people mentioned, even the short cycle ran for at least an hour, which was ridiculous. Other than that, it did a pretty good job of cleaning the dishes until about 6 months ago, when she noticed the dishes were coming out with what seemed to be dried on detergent that caused a white film on everything and was extremely hard to scrape off. The pots and pans turned a dull silver from this as well. We figured it was because the water wasn't hot enough to get the detergent completely off anymore. We would open it up in mid-cycle and the water was barely hot, and that's the time when the water needs to be the hottest so the detergent will dissolve. After reading the other reviews, I think it's time to just get a better dishwasher.

Leaks Water in Floor
by: Anonymous

This dishwasher is awful!! It was already installed in a new construction home and is only 4-5 years old. It leaks water from the bottom because a piece attached to the heating element is broken....and not easily fixed. Sears wants $119 just to come out. I bought the replacement part for 3.29.....therefore, I just bought a new Frigidaire and will be tossing the lemon! It doesn't dry the dishes no matter how much rinse aid you add and it doesn't clean them. Half the time, the soap is still streaking the dishes and requires an extra rinse cycle. DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!!

Kenmore 587 not draining
by: Anonymous

I purchased the 587 and it stopped draining after one year. Yes it is very lound but we knew it was load because the price was low and thats what you get for cheap products. Yes it should have lasted longer but we used it everyday for 365 days we paid $350 so it cost us 1.00 plus, water and electricity a day. All of us could wash the dishes buy hand and air dry too. Thats free!

JUNK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
by: Anonymous

We got our 587 with our new house and it is a piece of CRAP.
Doesn't get the dishes clean.
We literally have to wash our dishes before we put them in the dishwasher!!!???

As soon as we get some extra money this one is going on craigslist....(probably only worth about $50).

Oh and it's VERY LOUD and it doesn't have a "delay wash" setting so that you could avoid the world war 3 going on inside when it washing.

Kenmore is CRAP and this dishwasher is CRAP.

and by the way... we have not had one operating problem with ours... we hated it because of the way it functions and the lack of features it has and mostly because it's a dishwasher that doesn't really WASH THE DISHES!!!

Don't buy the Kenmore 587
by: Anonymous

I should have done more research before buying the Kenmore model 587. I figured that Kenmore was a reliable brand, as my washer and dryer are Kenmore, and they're great. However, I have to agree with the other reviewers here regarding the performance of the 587 dishwasher - I can never put in dishes that are extremely dirty, or they won't get clean. Also, I find that the dishes don't dry well without a drying agent added. I have had consistent difficulty with the overall perfomance of this machine. I will most likely replace it within the next few months.

I agree with all comments above. Ours is less than 3 years old and needs a new motor. Dishes are dirty, machine is noisy and takes forever to run a load.

Kenmore Dishwasher # 587

I have had the model 587 less than a month and the seal fell off the door this morning. It is also noisy and wasn't installed correctly, not level. I'm considering another model of another brand to replace it already!

Sears 587 Dishwasher
by: Gerry Campbell

We purchased this dishwasher about a year and a half ago. Within 10 months it was leaking. After many missed or late service calls by Sears under warranty, it is unusable, leaks terribly and has ruined our baseboards. I am suing Sears in small claims court and they are fighting it tooth and nail and have so far drawn it out over 6 months.

I will never buy from Sears again as they are not truthful on their slogan about satisfied customers.

Deplorable POS
by: Anonymous

The other negative reviews sound so familiar. It's like we've all owned the very same unit!

Glasses come out hazier than when they went in and smell funky to boot. The occasional fork or spoon ends up looking like a glazed donut. I actually prewash AND postwash the dishes (I think that's called "enabling").

And oh, the sounds it makes. It's always roared and growled. Lately it howls like a banshee about midway through its epoch of a wash cycle. I hope its throwing a bearing so I have an excuse to replace it!

I bought this dishwasher from a summer house that was being demolished in 2009. I was told that it was about two years old and it did seem hardly used. I installed it in May 2010 and can say - "It ain't like my 25 year old Kitchen-Aid" that I removed. First, it is VERY noisey. I added house insulation on both sides of it and that quieted it some. Second, There is no "rinse & hold" such as on Kitchen-Aid. The shortest cycle for "rinsing" is perhaps 30 minutes. Third, running a regular load seems to take hours. I have not noticed the problems mentioned above about mildew and other things that I have not mentioned. I certainly would not buy one again. This cost me $100 and will go from my summer house at the end of the season.

Noisy and Dirty!!
by: Anonymous

We purchased the Kenmore 587 dishwasher from Sears along with a new stove, fridge and microwave one year ago. The dishwasher is terrible. It is so loud you'd think that you were in an industrial building. It was not as loud at first as it is now, it has gotten much worse. My glasses are consistently dirty, which is disgusting as it obciously cannot be sanitary. Not to mention the fact that the cycles take so long. How this can be and energy efficent model is beyond me.We are getting a new one. Suggestions?

Mixed bag

I have not had most of the problems that some of the negative reviews here have mentioned.

The good: On a full wash with heat dry, dishes go in dirty, come out clean and dry. No clogs, mildew, leaks, or anything else like that. Never had any problem with silverware. My 587 has a very nice countertop so that even though it takes up space, it makes for a handy prep workspace.

The bad: Dishes with a lot of dried-on gunk will not get clean. The "air dry" means you'd better keep the door open for the dishes to dry, otherwise they'll remain wet for days. And of course, it takes away use of the sink while it's running.

Lasting pretty well considering its age
by: Anonymous

I own a Kenmore dishwasher model 587 originally purchased several years ago from Sears. This model is a built-in model, meaning it fits into the existing cabinet space and is permanently hooked into the plumbing rather than being a portable dishwasher on wheels that you have to hook up manually to the sink. This is very convenient, before I had a non built in dishwasher and it was a pain to wheel it over to the sink and get it properly hooked up.

This dishwasher is actually about 10 years old currently, so it is long lasting, but it has recently started having a few problems so it isn't very reliable beyond the 10 year mark. The Kenmore Model 587 was fairly inexpensive when purchased but only has pretty basic functions. The dishwasher has various settings such as quick wash, pots and pans wash for difficult to clean items, and rinse and hold. It also has a heated drying feature.

This dishwasher works well at cleaning mildly to moderately soiled dishes. The dishes cannot be too dirty when put into this dishwasher or not only will they not get clean, but debris will blow all over the other dishes in the dishwasher, and most inconveniently, particles can clog up the water emitters and they then must be cleaned out by hand. Recently, my Kenmore Model 587 has had trouble draining properly, with water often standing in the bottom of the dishwasher once the cycle is finished. It also occasionally leaks out of the bottom corners.

Given that the dishwasher is about 10 years old and inexpensive, I feel that it lasted pretty well for its lifetime considering the price and its age. Kenmore is a reliable brand and Sears does offer good service if you ever have any trouble with your Kenmore dishwasher. I would recommend this dishwasher if you are on a budget, but if you are able to afford it, a more expensive dishwasher with more features and more cleaning power would be better.

Dissatisfied with Dishwasher
by: Anonymous

I also have a Model 587.15162400 Kenmore Diswasher that was installed by the homebuilder contractor in 2005. I agree with these comments completely. The dishes are not clean after when the wash cycle is completed. This applies to items loaded in either the top or bottom rack. I has a service technician check the machine shortly after moving into the new house. He did not find any problems. But, obviously there are.
