Kenmore Quiet Guard-Standard Model #587.1525*

by Gary
(Oregon)

I purchased a dishwasher, Model #587.15254402, in February of 2007. About 6 months later it started leaking. Repair came out and replaced the door seal and lower spray arm. At 17 months of ownership, it started making a high pitched squeal during the wash cycle.

I called service and $70.00 later they told me it was a bad bearing in the motor and I would have to have the motor/pump replaced. They quoted me a price of $411.00!! I paid $427.00 for the dishwasher new. I went online and found this same motor/pump assembly through sers.com/parts for $69.99. I will buy it from them and have someone else install it.

We are only a 2 person household and I rinse the dishes first before putting them in the dishwasher...there was no reason why this dishwasher shouldn't have lasted longer!! Sears Service 800 has been moved to India and it's very difficult to communicate with most of the operators.

One of them even hung up on me when I questioned why I couldn't have a service tech call me earlier than the day before my appointment which wasn't going to be for over 2 weeks later.
Since buying the dishwasher I have also purchased a side by side refrigerator and a smooth top range. How long before something goes wrong with them?? I am now looking at a washer/dryer combo but I'm not sure I want to go back to Sear's if your product quality and customer service have declined like this.

I grew up with Kenmore and I'll be loyal to it unless I feel like I'm getting screwed over and right now I do. Our previous dishwasher which was a GE and was in the house when we bought it lasted for 14 years before it had a problem.

I am very disillusioned with SEARS right now!!

Bad Control Timer
by: Chris

Was asked to check on my friends rental because the Quiet Guard Standard was running the cycle without any water. After establishing the valve, and float operated properly, examined the timer to see that two contacts on the timer were broken off. The plastic gears looked fairly warn as well.

The part, through Sears, cost $147.80 plus $15.99 for shipping. Just came off warrantee by only days, thank you Sears! After taxes we would be half way into the cost of a new one, only to find out something else is about to break. Shopping for one now.

Don't use tablets with this machine!
by: Anonymous

We have this identical 587.1525* Kenmore dishwasher. It was purchased new in July 2007. The machine began making the high pitched squeal in the wash cycle.

I removed the front cover and spent an hour on my side watching the machine go through a cycle expecting to hear the pump squeal but that was not the case.

Went on the internet and found this site and the comments about dumping the tablets and using a gel instead. Problem solved... for a $6 jug of dishwasher gel. Just ran the first full cycle with the gel and no more squealing!

THANK YOU to all who took the time to post your experiences with this machine and saving me a bunch of grief and money throwing parts at the problem!

would not purchase mfr again, ever
by: Kath

Bought the Kenmore model from Sears. The dishwasher never turns on properly, you have to turn the knob to the right and then back to Normal to get it started. About three months ago the squealing started. like everyone else, thought it needed vinegar, thought it was the detergent, even tried putting the cycle on Heavy Wash but in the beginning of the cycle you hear the horrendous squeal. The dishwasher does not clean dishes properly, Have to spot check every single item, and it will ruin the stainless steel.
I think the next time I invest in an appliance will go high-end. This product is not worth the earache.

spinner keeps pulling off
by: Julie

We purchased a Kenmore Quiet Guard Standard Washer a couple of years ago. The bottom spinner pulled out one day when the lower tier was pulled out. Since then, everytime we pull out the lower drawer, the spinner pulls out. When I went to Sears, they do not have the part available. I have to hop online to get the part for over $50.00. The dishwasher we bought at a garage sale prior to this one had no problems. I guess we should start checking out the Garage Sales.

Very disappointed
by: Michelle Smith

Quiet? NOT!! Do not purchase this if you want a quiet dishwasher and the racks plastic coating comes off the tops of the spikes, so all your beautiful dishes get rust stains and you cant get rid of them, very disappointed.

Barely One Year Old And Needs Repair
by: DaveFromCT

I just bought a model 587.1526 Kenmore dishwasher in March 2010 and in either March or April of this year, the thing started squealing like stuck pig. So I figured it was loaded improperly or maybe we needed to use another detergent. Nothing my wife and I tried worked and the high pitched noise got worse as time went by. So I cleaned it with vinegar like the manual described but to no avail. I just got off the phone with Sears and they refuse to even think about servicing it unless I pay a technician $129 just to come over and check it out! So after speaking to a supervisor(supposedly) I told her I was done being a Sears customer. I am going to try that dishwasher cleaner like someone did and had luck and if that fails, then I am going to contact the people on the website someone discovered (www.searsch.com) Does anyone remember the time when Sears sold quality appiances???

Poor Dish Washer
by: Anonymous

The Kenmore Dishwasher we currently have is the third machine, same model, replacing the original one installed in our brand new home. After the third one became defective they wouldn't replace it. We offered to pay the difference for a better machine but we were told that was not possible. All the homes in our development have the same washer and we haven't heard a positive comment about any of them. Although, the Kenmore Quiet Guard-Standard can be heard anywhere in the home.

Works Great
by: Anonymous

We've had ours for about 5 years.....purrs like a kitten. I have always suspected that Sears Competitors spend days trolling and writing bad reviews.

I would buy another Quiet Guard in a heart beat!

Much of the same with our #587.1625
by: Tim

What a major disappointmnet to see that Sears has been no help with these problems. These machines are actually built by Whirlpool for Sears so be very wary of quality issues with both brands.

Kenmore Dishwasher - broke after 1 year!
by: Alissa Schiada

I bought a Kenmore dishwasher in Oct. 2009. I was not able to afford an extended warranty. Now a year later, I've been told the pump and motor are broken. Est. cost is well over $400.00.

Sears customer service is a joke. I was told "That's the way the world works. You're not under warranty so it's not our problem".

I sent a complaint to Sears and assured them I will never buy anything again.

Worst Dishwasher Ever Owned
by: Sheryll

Mine came with my house as well--a very upscale house I might add. Has never cleaned dishes properly; always had to run on heavy to clean anything. Mine periodically wouldn't turn on either--I would have to keep turning and pushing to eventually get it to work. And despite the name it is not quiet. This weekend it started leaking and the bottom is broken and I have only been in the house 2 years.

Will not clean dishes!!!
by: Kevin

Have only had the Kenmore Quiet Guard for 1 year. When we first got it, it was really quiet and you would not even no it was running. Now it is very loud and can even be heard from up stairs. The biggest issue is that it stopped cleaning the dishes and really there is know point to even run it anymore. I have had it cleaned but still did not help. Nothing like paying over 400.00 for something that worked for 1 year. I will never buy Sears again.

by: Anonymous

Mine's 4 years old and I just discovered it's been leaking. I now have to replace part of the floor where it has rotted the wood and there is mold inside the spot where it is.

Piece of junk came with the house new. I will NEVER own another Sears appliance and will tell everybody I can about it !!!!!!!

Started to emit a strange noise
by: Kevin

I've had a kenmore quiet guard 4 for close to 5 years. I've never had any issues with it other than it doesn't clean all that well but the last few times I've run it it's making a strange more high pitched whine like noise. I took apart the screen and cleaned it thinking that would help but it didn't. Could this mean that the motor is wearing out?

Won't start

I just bought a new house that's only 2 years old. Today the kenmore washer decided that it would not start. I flipped the breaker and tried everything else I could think of, but it's not working. Guess I'll be buying a new washer....

leaking water / blinking lights
by: Greg

We bought a Kenmore Quiet Guard - Standard several years ago and have problems ever since we bought it. The lights on the dishwasher kept blinking suggesting that there was an error. Repairman said that our hot water heater was not hot enough. Turned up hot water heater and still the blinking lights. We quit calling service man after several failed repair attempts. Now water is leaking from the door. I used to trust Kenmore products, but not anymore. It seems like most appliances are pieces of junk and only last 3-4 years.

not up to par
by: Anonymous

I purchased this dishwasher as I have always bought from Sears for any appliance in the past. I feel totally 'duped'.
this dishwasher cleans the dishes so poorly I end up re-washing items after they are 'clean'. I rinse mine ahead of time too, doesn't matter.
If you are going to make a product, make it well, you'll get more return purchases that way and not bad reviews like this one.
I am not a loyal Sears appliance customer anymore. not after I blew $400 plus on a lemon.
Mine also makes weird noises, like the high pitched sound mentioned in another review. the sounds 'come and go' so unless it stays, not fixing until then.

by: Gaye Harris

My landlord bought me a beautiful brand new black Quiet-guard about 2.5 years ago.....it looks just great BUT we've had spray arm issues 3 times and the motor had to be replaced already - it cleans worth crap!!! I have to wash my dishes twice to make sure they're clean and now my landlord wonders why the water bills are higher?? I too was raised on Kenmore but I'm doubting they know about dishwashers....

stupid piece of crap
by: Anonymous

So I have the Kenmore Quiet guard standard piece of crap dishwasher. It started leaking and has ruined my floor. Brand new cabinets are going to have to be replaced.....along with my floor that has now buckled. One would think the makers of this dishwasher would step up and admit they have an issue. I am a single mom and i cannot afford to replace my entire kitchen floor and cabinets and dishwasher. UGHH!!!!

Piece of crap
by: Nannetta

We purchased the same model two years ago and it didn't last 6 months before it started leaking on our wood floors. Now the water won't drain! I would never buy a Kenmore dishwasher again! The repairs are more than the actual cost of the machine!

Really bad machine
by: Anonymous

We got the same dishwasher 2 years ago. One year later the main fuse in the dishwaser blew costing us over $100 to repair. With a blown fuse, absolutely nothing about the dishwasher would work, not even the lights. A year after that, exactly one year later, the same thing happened. Except this time, it was accompanied by a burning smell. When we called the service man again, he said the control panal had melted and the fuse was blown. He said there was no reason that this happened, but he has seen it often in Kenmore models. That was going going to be another over $200 repair, so we just opted to buy a whole new dishwasher instead of wasting our money year after year.

high pitched noise from dishwasher
by: Anonymous

I too had heard that noise. Also, I was using the Electrosol packs (with the little ball in the middle). After reading the posts here, I bought some dishwasher cleaner. I ran it through two or three times and the noise stopped. I now know that I can't use the power packs from Electrosol. I'm just going to stick with Cascade powder. I don't have any problems with that.
On a side note. I noticed my dishwasher was leaking in two areas where there were screws located on the inside door. I went to tighten them and one promptly stripped itself. I know have this problem to contend with. With all the horror stories about SEars and their repairmen, I'm too scared to even call.

Energy efficient
by: Katye

We purchased our Kenmore Quiet Guard Standard dishwasher in white a few months ago. We made our purchase from Sears, and although our experience with Sears was horrible, the dishwasher seems to be working great so far.

We decided on this particular model of dishwasher because our old dishwater (A General Electric model) stopped working shortly after we had our daughter, and we didn't have a whole lot of money to spend on a new one. Hand washing baby bottles along with all our other dishes didn't sound like an attractive option, so we headed to Sears in search of a Kenmore.

We had purchased a Kenmore washer and dryer from Sears and had been happy with those. They are a great brand of product for the price. One of the features we really liked about this dishwasher was the Sani Rinse option. It was perfect for sanitizing baby bottles. We also liked that it was much quieter than our last dishwasher.

It is also an Energy Star appliance, so it uses 20% less energy, and has the Smart Wash Cycle, which determines how much energy, water, and time you really need for each individual load of dishes, keeping our costs down. The only annoying issue we've had with this dishwasher is we've noticed it doesn't click closed very easily. Obviously the washer won't start without the door being completely closed, but it doesn't stop our daughter from pulling it open and playing with dirty dishes!

Overall, we are happy with our purchase, but we will probably not buy a Kenmore appliance again because of the problems we had with the staff at Sears. They called us two different times to tell us our dishwasher had arrived, and both times that we drove there (a 20 minute ride), they could not locate the washer in their stock room.

When we finally asked that they deliver it, they wanted to charge us $75! We picked it up eventually and plan to never do business with that company again.

An update from the original poster.
by: Gary from Oregon

I received the new motor and pump assembly. Doesn't look like much for $70.00. I'm really shocked now with Sear's repair telling me it was $411.00!!

Anyway, in the meantime we switched back to Electrosol Gel Pacs which we had been usung all along. We did, however, make a mistake and buy the power tablets with the little ball in the top. Once we used all of the tablets up and switched back to the gel pacs, within a few washes, the noise stopped!!! Everything now seems to be just fine without any repair work having ever been done.

I called Electrosol and they said they had never heard of the problem before but perhaps the tablets weren't dissolving all the way and that was what was creating the high pitch noise as the undissolved parts were creating a blockage.
So, now I've spent $70.00 for a service man to tell me I needed a new motor/pump plus I spent another $70.00 on the part and it turns out there wasn't anything wrong with the dishwasher at all! Electrosol did help some by sending me two $1.00 coupons..YAHOO!!

However, the whole thing does boil down to the fact that Sear's Service department and their call center in India are worthless!!!
