Kenmore Quiet Guard-Standard Model #587.1525*

by Gary
(Oregon)

I purchased a dishwasher, Model #587.15254402, in February of 2007. About 6 months later it started leaking. Repair came out and replaced the door seal and lower spray arm. At 17 months of ownership, it started making a high pitched squeal during the wash cycle.

I called service and $70.00 later they told me it was a bad bearing in the motor and I would have to have the motor/pump replaced. They quoted me a price of $411.00!! I paid $427.00 for the dishwasher new. I went online and found this same motor/pump assembly through sers.com/parts for $69.99. I will buy it from them and have someone else install it.

We are only a 2 person household and I rinse the dishes first before putting them in the dishwasher...there was no reason why this dishwasher shouldn't have lasted longer!! Sears Service 800 has been moved to India and it's very difficult to communicate with most of the operators.

One of them even hung up on me when I questioned why I couldn't have a service tech call me earlier than the day before my appointment which wasn't going to be for over 2 weeks later.
Since buying the dishwasher I have also purchased a side by side refrigerator and a smooth top range. How long before something goes wrong with them?? I am now looking at a washer/dryer combo but I'm not sure I want to go back to Sear's if your product quality and customer service have declined like this.

I grew up with Kenmore and I'll be loyal to it unless I feel like I'm getting screwed over and right now I do. Our previous dishwasher which was a GE and was in the house when we bought it lasted for 14 years before it had a problem.

I am very disillusioned with SEARS right now!!

high pitched noise from dishwasher
by: Anonymous

I too had heard that noise. Also, I was using the Electrosol packs (with the little ball in the middle). After reading the posts here, I bought some dishwasher cleaner. I ran it through two or three times and the noise stopped. I now know that I can't use the power packs from Electrosol. I'm just going to stick with Cascade powder. I don't have any problems with that.
On a side note. I noticed my dishwasher was leaking in two areas where there were screws located on the inside door. I went to tighten them and one promptly stripped itself. I know have this problem to contend with. With all the horror stories about SEars and their repairmen, I'm too scared to even call.

Piece of crap
by: Nannetta

We purchased the same model two years ago and it didn't last 6 months before it started leaking on our wood floors. Now the water won't drain! I would never buy a Kenmore dishwasher again! The repairs are more than the actual cost of the machine!

stupid piece of crap
by: Anonymous

So I have the Kenmore Quiet guard standard piece of crap dishwasher. It started leaking and has ruined my floor. Brand new cabinets are going to have to be replaced.....along with my floor that has now buckled. One would think the makers of this dishwasher would step up and admit they have an issue. I am a single mom and i cannot afford to replace my entire kitchen floor and cabinets and dishwasher. UGHH!!!!

Kenmore???
by: Gaye Harris

My landlord bought me a beautiful brand new black Quiet-guard about 2.5 years ago.....it looks just great BUT we've had spray arm issues 3 times and the motor had to be replaced already - it cleans worth crap!!! I have to wash my dishes twice to make sure they're clean and now my landlord wonders why the water bills are higher?? I too was raised on Kenmore but I'm doubting they know about dishwashers....

not up to par
by: Anonymous

I purchased this dishwasher as I have always bought from Sears for any appliance in the past. I feel totally 'duped'.
this dishwasher cleans the dishes so poorly I end up re-washing items after they are 'clean'. I rinse mine ahead of time too, doesn't matter.
If you are going to make a product, make it well, you'll get more return purchases that way and not bad reviews like this one.
I am not a loyal Sears appliance customer anymore. not after I blew $400 plus on a lemon.
Mine also makes weird noises, like the high pitched sound mentioned in another review. the sounds 'come and go' so unless it stays, not fixing until then.

Energy efficient
by: Katye

We purchased our Kenmore Quiet Guard Standard dishwasher in white a few months ago. We made our purchase from Sears, and although our experience with Sears was horrible, the dishwasher seems to be working great so far.

We decided on this particular model of dishwasher because our old dishwater (A General Electric model) stopped working shortly after we had our daughter, and we didn't have a whole lot of money to spend on a new one. Hand washing baby bottles along with all our other dishes didn't sound like an attractive option, so we headed to Sears in search of a Kenmore.

We had purchased a Kenmore washer and dryer from Sears and had been happy with those. They are a great brand of product for the price. One of the features we really liked about this dishwasher was the Sani Rinse option. It was perfect for sanitizing baby bottles. We also liked that it was much quieter than our last dishwasher.

It is also an Energy Star appliance, so it uses 20% less energy, and has the Smart Wash Cycle, which determines how much energy, water, and time you really need for each individual load of dishes, keeping our costs down. The only annoying issue we've had with this dishwasher is we've noticed it doesn't click closed very easily. Obviously the washer won't start without the door being completely closed, but it doesn't stop our daughter from pulling it open and playing with dirty dishes!

Overall, we are happy with our purchase, but we will probably not buy a Kenmore appliance again because of the problems we had with the staff at Sears. They called us two different times to tell us our dishwasher had arrived, and both times that we drove there (a 20 minute ride), they could not locate the washer in their stock room.

When we finally asked that they deliver it, they wanted to charge us $75! We picked it up eventually and plan to never do business with that company again.

An update from the original poster.
by: Gary from Oregon

I received the new motor and pump assembly. Doesn't look like much for $70.00. I'm really shocked now with Sear's repair telling me it was $411.00!!

Anyway, in the meantime we switched back to Electrosol Gel Pacs which we had been usung all along. We did, however, make a mistake and buy the power tablets with the little ball in the top. Once we used all of the tablets up and switched back to the gel pacs, within a few washes, the noise stopped!!! Everything now seems to be just fine without any repair work having ever been done.

I called Electrosol and they said they had never heard of the problem before but perhaps the tablets weren't dissolving all the way and that was what was creating the high pitch noise as the undissolved parts were creating a blockage.
So, now I've spent $70.00 for a service man to tell me I needed a new motor/pump plus I spent another $70.00 on the part and it turns out there wasn't anything wrong with the dishwasher at all! Electrosol did help some by sending me two $1.00 coupons..YAHOO!!

However, the whole thing does boil down to the fact that Sear's Service department and their call center in India are worthless!!!
