Whirlpool DU1145XTPQA Dishwasher

by Carol
(UK)

I have had this machine for 6 months. It replaced a Kenmore that was 10 years old. The main difference between the two machines is that the Whirlpool is a *tall tub* design and the Kenmore was not. For my family of four I could get an average days worth of dishes in the Kenmore and only run the machine once a day.

The *tall tub* design of the Whirlpool cuts down on available real estate requiring me to run the machine an average of 10 times a week. I would rather have more surface area than more height in the tub. The Whirlpool has a nice cutlery basket that can sit in the bottom drawer or mounted to the inside of the dishwasher door to provide a bit more space in the bottom drawer.

I have noticed, however, that when mounted to the door the cutlery does not get as clean. It can be removed from the machine and opened for easy access to your silverware and small items or safely remove knives.

It is relatively quiet but not as quiet as some Bosches i've seen. it cleans ok. we have hard water and with that comes the occasional dirty items (one or two per load).

I'm a bit disappointed with this choice, I may go back to Kenmore next time. Hopefully I can get away from the tall tub design.

Waste of money
by: Tom from Wichita

We've had this machine for exactly 1 year 5 months. It replaced a Kenmore that we had had for about 6 years. I like many of the features on the dishwasher, I just wish it would wash the dishes properly every time. Most of the time I'm having to run it through 2 complete cycles in order for it to 1) use all the soap without leaving half of it in the dispenser 2) clean the dishes. It's just my wife and I so we normally run light loads every evening. About a week ago it started to make a strange noise...now it's just taking up space in the kitchen. I REALLY doubt I'll replace it with another Whirlpool...I'd like something that last longer then a year and a half.

Nothing but problems
by: Shawna

While installing this dishwasher we noticed it was broken and needed to return it for an exchange. This should have been a clue to purchase another brand, but we didn't. We have had nothing but problems with it, had a repair man the day before the warranty ran out. Still has many issues, but who wants to invest in service cost on something that is totally worthless.

I end up hand washing everything I load into it. I paid the same for this one as I paid for the Maytag that lasted me 14 years. And I feel as if I have thrown money away as I need to replace this one after one year.

This dishwasher does not clean well
by: Amanda

Save your money. Get something else. I am very dissatisfied with this dishwasher. I have always purchased Kenmores and Whirlpools in the past, and this one seemed like a good option when I bought it. It was replacing a dishwasher that I got with a house I bought in Dec 07. That dishwasher was an older model Kenmore and washed well, but dumped water out of the bottom onto the floor.

This one does not wash well. I have a family of 6 and we run the dishwasher 2x per day, full. However, since getting this dishwasher I've had to wash my dishes by hand. This sterilizes dishes only, does not wash them.

If you want your dishwasher to actually "wash" your dishes, here's how to do it... First run it on a rinse cycle twice, then run it on a "pots & pans" wash with "sani-rinse" and "high temp wash" you and may get the bottom rack of dishes clean. But then again, maybe not. If you run it twice, then wash the dishes by hand and then run it again with no dishes and some vinegar, then reload, and run your dishwasher it will be clean.

And with a three hour cycle each time, that's a real winner, as you can see. I've had this dishwasher for just over a year- I believe in trying things out for at least a year before reviewing them- most things work like a charm when you first buy them, but time tells a different story.

This one has worked poorly from the beginning, and Whirlpool customer service is not so helpful. Do you want to pay $70 for a technician to come out and "fix" your brand new appliance? Hmmm... If this is Whirlpool quality, then there must be something better out there, because this is awful.

Spacing is awkward
by: Kim

Our family has been moderately satisfied with this dishwasher. It does require us to pre-rinse more than we would like, but overall it does an okay job. It is important that you fill it appropriately though. It took us about a week to figure out the best place for cups and plates and so forth.

My major unhappiness with the dishwasher has to do with the fact that I can't really put a lot of my full size plates on the bottom or the water spinner hits them. The number of times cookie sheets, plates, large bowls, and cutting boards have had to be moved and fiddled with just so I can close the darn thing is too much to count.

The additional problem with the height is that many times things shift during the process of the wash and then it will make it difficult for us to open. However, I have been happy with the energy star value. I usually will do a normal wash with no heat, and I just let the dishes air dry in there. Not only does it cut down on the heat in the kitchen, but it saves even more green and is better for the environment.

The only other minor annoyance that I have with the dishwasher is that not all of our cups and mugs fit easily into it. It just seems that the peg spacing is awkward and less user-friendly than other machines that we have had. We are just renters now, but it is unlikely that we would have purchased this machine on our own, particularly because we find it fairly loud and intrusive.

But the bonus is that you can program it to run 2, 4, or 6 hours after you load it, which is a really nice feature.
